Security Breach Statistics

As technology began to advance into our lives in the beginning of this century so did the threats associated with it. In 2000, the FBI stated 71% of security breaches were carried out by insiders, not by attackers from an external network. The tides changed over the next couple of years. By 2003, 90% of security breaches were from external sources. The explanation for the shift in attacks is unknown. Perhaps it is from the affordability, scalability, and mass use of Windows computers in production environments. Add the natural flaws of Microsoft’s Windows Operating System to the wide spread implementation of the machines, and the problem of staffing expert IT personnel to patch and maintain the systems becomes another impairment. Currently, Cybint News reports there are currently 230,000 new malware samples daily, and there is a hacker attempt every 39 seconds. Only 38% of organizations claim they are prepared to handle a cyber attack.
